"The end of the world is now, sit back and relax." - Director Adae Grace TE327.

My punishment is that I linger on.

A punishment for what? Well, that's academic at this point. But to sate your curiosity, I would have to say it is a punishment for failing to be the stereotypical hero that is expected to be born of apocalyptic times.

I saw it all through displays and readouts, although mostly through nether. I was there at the end. The beginning of the Fourth Exodus, the final exodus too, was probably the moment I decided to leave.

"...minor conflict on the Eastern border worlds of Xye and Dihu .... temporary loss of communication .... hardly worth mentioning." - 5th License Ashar Ur-ger TE326.

Did I throw away everything? No, not exactly. I sit here in this room, full of reminders of everything we came to be known for. Our talents were many, that's why we prospered so. Ironically we had seen what was to become our own downfall far too many times in the faces of others. We were so sure of our ability to survive and thrive no matter the odds.

Those that were left were hunted.
Those hopes that remained were extinguished one by one.
Those that would give us refuge suffered the same fate.
There is no hope. There is no longer need for hope.

"My punishment is that I linger on, alone." - 87-109th Squad Leader .... FE13
Oh, if only you knew the half of it....

I don't have the tallent or patience to write this as the full story that it is, but sometimes I get the urge to put tiny bits of it down on paper. It probably won't make sense because of that but... meh.

Edit: I changed the last line to something more bitterly amusing for myself.

--------------------------

I didn't put this into the Science Fiction category because the description was "Science fiction takes a glimpse into scientific theory and projects this theory into storylines". This bit of writing doesn't focus on scientific theory at all.

I chose the Perspectives category, because part of the description was "Perspective prose can be general fiction or semi-fictional accounts of personal events". That sounds as close as I can get it.
